We are seeking an experienced HR Business Partner with strong generalist experience to join our team. This is a direct-hire, full-time role on Acro’s corporate team. You will be providing HR services to one of our charter school HRO clients. During COVID you will be working remotely and once we are able to return to the office you will be working in an HR office at the client’s District office in Detroit, MI. In this role, you will be providing services for three campuses in Detroit and one campus in Grand Rapids. The ideal candidate for this role is experienced, mature, and takes pride in providing excellence in “customer service” to the internal “customers” they provide service for!


Reporting to the VP of HR, the HR Business Partner is responsible for carrying out the HR Generalist duties of one or more of the functional areas in the Human Resources Department for our HRO client. The selected candidate will perform the full spectrum of HR generalist duties for the client (except for recruiting). Will provide coverage for three campuses in Detroit, MI, and one campus in Grand Rapids, MI. During COVID-19 this is a remote position. After COVID-19 you will be working on-site at the client location in Detroit and occasionally traveling (same-day travel no overnights) to Grand Rapids as necessary.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Draft job descriptions, post recruitment ads, source and screen candidates, arrange interviews, negotiate, and prepare/extend offers of employment.
  • Conducting new hire onboarding & orientation and off-boarding meetings
  • Benefits administration including but not limited to; Medical, Dental, Vision, FMLA, COBRA, 4013(b)
  • Payroll administration (including Biweekly Payroll processing with PayCom) and processing time off and vacation requests.
  • Preparing and maintaining employee records, processing status changes, certifications, and other documents required for compliance.
  • Conducting and processing requests for substance abuse and background screening/testing of employees and candidates for employment.
  • Document, track and follow up on work-related injuries/accidents
  • Respond to unemployment claims in a timely fashion
  • Track and document Performance Management at the direction of Superintendent or Asst. Superintendent
  • Consult with Superintendent, Asst. Superintendent, and Principals regarding HR best practices
  • Prepare for and attend audits to ensure they are completed successfully
  • Conduct and document investigations as needed
  • Meet with Superintendent, Assistant Superintendant, and Principals at regular intervals and ad hoc as needed (includes both Detroit and Grand Rapids Campuses)
  • Check-in/Touch Base with all staff via email, in-person visits, (upon request and at regular intervals during non-covid times) and Teleconference (Zoom, Teams, etc.) or via telephone
  • Other HR-related duties and special projects as assigned

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, HR, or Business Management.
  • GPA of 3.5 or above.
  • SPHR or SHRM-SCP certified.


  • 5-7 years of full HR Generalist experience.
  • Must be able to communicate with diverse internal employees and external applicants to routinely produce an environment that is warm and friendly.
  • Must be able to respond timely and effectively to employees, external customers, and vendors with exceptional customer service, to produce positive outcomes.
  • Must have superior written and verbal skills.
  • Must have the ability to remain confidential and maintain a professional appearance.
  • Documentation/communication of status and developing a plan of action to complete tasks in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Strong written and verbal interpersonal communication and problem resolution
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Proficient computer skills; especially Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.

Physical Demands

  • Frequently sits, walks, and stands.
  • May be required to occasionally lift a box of copy paper.
  • Will be required to travel to client location(s) – Detroit and Grand Rapids. Day travel only as overnight travel is typically not required.

Work Environment

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee will typically work in an office type setting.
  • The noise level in the work area is usually low.

Travel/Work Location

The position is remote at present due to COVID-19, but otherwise will be located on campus at the office in Detroit. Will also need to travel to Grand Rapids, MI (day trip) at least once per quarter or as needed for special circumstances (investigations, audits, etc.).
